The next morning I awoke and had some cereal from the supplies I bought
in Haines Junction the day before. After another cursory check of the regulator,
I couldn't find anything obvious that was wrong, so I decided to continue
on to Anchorage using my remaining battery power. A fully charged spare
battery waits in back as reserve in case the first one becomes depleted.
I stopped at a town near the Alaska/Canada border to call Krista Stern in
Anchorage and the parts place in Portland, Oregon. Krista said she would
be leaving tomorrow evening, and that her roomate, Deb, might have to leave
as well. That would not be good, because I need to have parts shipped from
Portland to an address in Anchorage. I asked her if she had any friends
that might have some room, and she said she would check.
In the meantime, I traveled on to Tok, Alaska, in hopes that a NAPA store
there might carry the voltage regulator. Unfortunately, they do not stock
that item. I called Portland and ordered a generator, regulator, and water
pump to be sent Next Day UPS to Krista's address, with no signature required
(leave at the door).
Tonight I'm staying at the Caribou Motel in Glenallen, about 200 miles from
Anchorage. I've replaced the old battery with the new battery, even though
it wasn't dead yet. I'm charging the old one in my room with a battery charger.
I lost the little card that has Krista's work number, so now I only have
her home number, which I will try tomorrow morning. Hopefully I'll be able
to catch Krista before she leaves for work.
