The next day we all woke up lazily and waited for Dana before going to breakfast.
I had an Irish omelette (corned beef & cheese sauce), strawberry pancakes,
and toast, and it was all delicious. I learned that Dana had also worked
as a raft guide in the past, so we had something to talk about.
Afterwards we drove to the Saturday fair, where all manner of arts and crafts
were for sale in little stands. I looked around for gifts, and found a couple
of interesting things, but a lot was there obviously just for tourists,
and I wanted a little more genuine piece of Alaska.
We proceeded back to Herb & Lori's house, where Dana left, Herb and
Lori worked on building a wooden dresser in the garage, and I worked a little
more on the fuel gauge. I found that the float had a tiny hole in it and
had filled with gasoline. I drilled out the hole, emptied it, and patched
the hole with JB Weld adhesive. That fixed the problem.
I took the car to the lube shop to have them repack the front bearings,
but they were about to close. I'll feel the hubs as I travel to see if they
are hot, and if so, I have the bearing repacked somewhere down the road.
Tomorrow, I will leave the safe haven of Anchorage and trek back along the
Alaska Highway. This will be the longest and most barren portion of the
road thus far. I have driven 2000 miles, and traveled 1000 miles by ferry.
Now I begin the 3000 mile journey back home.
