I stayed an extra day at Sheila's house to take care of a few errands:
- I got directions to "Chevy's of the 40's" parts store in Washougal,
WA.
- I called for information about a ferry ticket from Bellingham, WA to
Haines, AK, which turns out to be rather expensive. They charge by the foot,
so longer vehicles cost more to transport.
- I called to check my credit card balance, so that I can mail off a check,
since the next payment will probably be due before I return.
I managed to convince Sheila that she needed a break from work, and she
guided me through Portland in search of a tarp and video camera. My current
tarp has substancial wind damage, and some of the grommets are starting
to pull out. I need something heavier. I already knew pretty much which
video camera I wanted, but I was waiting to get it in Portland because I
had heard of a place called "Camera World of Oregon" which has
some decent prices, in addition to no sales tax. I left the truck in a parking
lot in maximum security mode (my full complement of fake ignition, cables,
chains and padlocks engaged) and we proceeded on foot. The camera we found,
but the tarp eluded us, and after walking across Portland several times,
we found an Indian restaurant that Sheila remembered from years before,
but had not been to recently. The instant we walked through the door, the
smell was wonderful, and the food was excellent, though I probably should
not have ordered the Rogan Josh extra hot, because Sheila swore that she
would never be able to taste her mother's mild Danish cooking again.
