Day 21

Harry Fox takes the Internet Team to lunch. Dinner with Marom and Rachel. Another mystery appliance.

9/10/96

I've been conducting some technical interviews at Superstudio with people involved in audio, video, 3D art, C++ programming, and resource database management. If you are within a Softkey-affiliated company, these interviews will appear on the Contents page of this story over the next week or so.

Today Harry Fox took the entire Internet Team out to lunch on his personal expense. Harry is a part of Superstudio, but is rarely here because he is usually traveling on business. He has also provided guidance to the direction of the Internet Project. Unfortunately, I was unable to talk with Harry very much. I would have liked to find out more about what he does.

At lunchtime we all gathered and walked down to Rachmo's. On the way back, we stopped to take a picture in front of the Superstudio building.

Internet Team of Superstudio

That evening Marom invited me to dinner with he and his girfriend, Rachel. Marom works at Superstudio as the WebMaster of the Superstudio site. At 6PM, both of us still had work to do, but we decided to take a break for dinner and come back later.

We walked out to Marom's car, a well-used '79 Renault5. Marom popped the hood and proceeded to use a pipe wrench to take off the radiator cap. He then emptied the contents of a one-liter plastic bottle into the radiator, and explained that it was nothing to worry about, just regular procedure.

regular Renault procedure

We climbed into the tiny car. As Marom started the car for a while, I admired the various nuances that each past owner of the vehicle had contributed during his or her relationship with this vehicle. Someone had installed an aftermarket oil pressure gauge in the dash. Someone had installed a radio, but now all that was left were mounting screws. Who knows what happened to the passenger side sunvisor. Marom said it used to be more fun to drive when the speedometer needle spun round and round. Unfortunately, the speedometer is now boringly accurate.

It might surprise you to learn that such a small car has an automatic transmission. However, the lack of power makes it necessary to shift down to L1 or L2 on a regular basis, so Marom drives it like a stick shift, anyway.

Marom drove out to his apartment near Ammunition Hill. We parked on the sidewalk, and walked up 8 flights of stairs to his doorstep. Marom's neighbors on the 7th floor have a doorway that looks like a submarine hatch - but I digress. Rachel and Marom's dog "Doggie" were waiting inside.

Despite the fact that she wasn't feeling well, Rachel was gracious enough to fix a full meal, including potatoe pastries with gravy, meatballs, and mixed vegetables. It tried to help do something in the kitchen, but they would only let me set the table. I noticed a large white box on the kitchen counter, perhaps suitable for another mystery appliance contest. The only clue I'll give this time, is that it's not a microwave. If you think you know what it is, send mail to mysteryAppliance@malone.com . I'll present the results in an upcoming report.

Mystery Appliance - do you know what it is?

After dinner, Marom made some Turkish coffee, and Rachel brought out a box of cookies. I usually don't like cookies because they are too sweet, but these were very good, and I ate several. Marom put some spice called "Hawaij" in the coffee.

I told Rachel that my sister was coming to visit soon, and asked if she and Marom might want to join us for a walk in the Old City. However, she declined, saying that it wasn't very safe for Jews in certain parts of Old Jerusalem.

All three of us went downstairs to take Doggie for a walk, and then Marom and I drove back to Superstudio.

back in the Renault

That evening, while searching on the internet for Caroline Brock, whose former email address has disappeared, I came across a woman in Ireland name Caroline Brady, who listed one of her interests as Egyptology. I wrote her a note saying that I would be in Egypt soon, and asked for any advice she might have.

Once my sister arrives this Friday, I hope to travel to Egypt sometime within the following two weeks.

Was that a dishwasher? (Also, you might want to correct your Y2K issues... it's now 2001, not 19101)
