The job, and why I'm going.
I am a software engineer at the Learning Company, where we produce educational software that helps children learn to read, write, do math, and those sorts of things. Recently, a larger company called Softkey bought the Learning Company. In fact, Softkey has bought several software companies lately, and they are scattered all over the place. Because we are so far apart, sometimes it is hard to learn about what other people are doing, even though we're a part of the same company.
Over the next six weeks, I'll be working at another Softkey company called Superstudio, located in Jerusalem, Israel. From what I understand so far, my work will be to help the guys there create some sort of "virtual world" for customers to browse on the internet.
One reason for writing this story is to provide a way for family and friends to follow my adventure as I see the Middle East for the first time. Another intent is to provide people in other parts of Softkey with some insight into the development process that goes on in Israel.
So...with all that aside...here we go!
